Portugal's Ports: Upgrades Essential

Portugal needs to privatise its ports to become more competitive. According to The Economist more liberalisation is essential in order to compete effectively for container ship business.

Despite it's recent improvements in capacity and productivity and it's strategic location along the busy Asia-Europe shipping route, Portugal's ports are still minnow by European standards.


The report suggests that in order to make further gains, especially in the ultra price-sensitive transshipment market, Portugal needs to steer past two obstructions: powerful service providers and unionised workers.
